Hash Heaven: This City Has the World’s Biggest Hash Market

Imagine walking down a street lined with little shops, each selling a different kind of hash. Stop at each one, check out what they have, and shop around. Finally, decide on the most mind blowing hash you have ever seen.

Guess what? This is not just a fantasy, it is a little place called Christiania.

Christiania is a commune buried in the middle of Copenhagen, Denmark. It was founded in 1971 by groups of squatters, artists, and free spirits. It has been a haven ever since for countercultural lifestyles and movements.

One of the features Christiania is most well known for is its “Green Light District.”

In the New York Post, Julia D’Orazio described the weed wonderland.

“The hub of all activity in the district—Pusher Street (otherwise known as the Green Light District)—is home to various stands that openly sell hash in huts decked out along a portion of the strip.

“Business is open 24/7 with up to 40 different types of hashish readily available,” D’Orazio wrote. “Thus making it unofficially the largest hash market in the world. No wonder this is one of Copenhagen’s main tourist draws.”

While this little Danish hippie district definitely celebrates all things cannabis, there is still secrecy involved when it comes to buying hash.

“Upon closer inspection of each hut along Pusher Street and despite the fact that drugs are readily available, the sale is ever so discreet,” said D’Orazio. “My friend disappeared into a hut for a few minutes and came out beaming gleefully like a kid that just raided a candy store.”

“Once I stepped inside a hut, I noticed that even with the seller opting to guise himself, they were still hidden behind a blind when making a sale to protect their identity and trade.”

Christiania is most definitely a hashish heaven, a weed wonderland, and a marijuana miracle. It should be on the very top of your cannabis-themed travel plans.
