US military base tosses 400 tubes of lip balm containing THC

Service members at the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER) in Alaska were unwittingly dosing themselves with trace amounts of THC, thanks to a few hundred “SAPR” lip balm tubes distributed as part of an on-base promotion.

The THC-infused lip balm was distributed by the base’s sexual assault response coordinator office as a promotional item.

One of the ingredients in the lip balm is hemp seed oil, which contains tetrohydrocannibinol, or THC. Of course, THC is the psychoactive compound that gets cannabis users “high.”

According to Air Force Times, Base Personnel were informed of the situation via email and a Facebook post, which indicated that some 400 tubes of the THC-infused lip balm were to be recalled immediately.

The email, however, was quick to point out that the lip balm contained only traces of THC.

The amount would not even show up on a drug screening, let alone get anyone stoned, according to a report on THC and hemp oil cosmetics from the group Leson Environmental Consulting, included in the email.

The Sexual Assault Response Coordinator will no longer be handing out the SAPR lip balm and has asked that anyone who has already received one throw it away.

In an email statement Thursday, JBER spokesman 1st Lt. Michael Harrington said that, “We have identified mistakes in the purchasing process and have established safeguards to ensure that future purchases consider the possibility of such ingredients in ingestible products.”

“We believe in taking the route of utmost caution with our service members and their families’ health, and this case is no exception,” Harrington said.

Situations like the one at JBER, however, are likely to become more common as cannabis products are increasingly legalized.

Alaska legalized recreational cannabis use back in February, 2015. There are limits to this law, though, as there are in similar ones in other states.

People still can’t legally have more than 1 ounce of marijuana on them. Nor can they harvest more than 4 ounces in their home. And consuming marijuana in public and driving while high are no-nos.

Products containing hemp seed oil, like the THC-infused lip balm that found its way onto an Air Force Base in Alaska, are more and more common.
