Shatter An Ultra-High-Potency Marijuana Extract, Is Lighting Up The East Coast

Shatter

It was only a matter of time before the super-high-potency products now legal in Western U.S. states like Colorado and Oregon made their way cross-country to the East Coast. Now it looks like “shatter,” a super-potent extract of cannabis that can boast up to 80% THC, is showing up on law enforcement’s radar.

On Monday, Loudoun County sheriff’s deputies intercepted a truck that had about $900,000 worth of packaged marijuana near Dulles International Airport.

Included in that load was 15 pounds of shatter. Which is sold by the gram because of its potency, retails for about $60 per gram in Colorado, so 10 pounds of it would be worth nearly $270,000 — in a state where it is legal. Typically it can be found in medical dispensaries.

Black-market shatter probably would cost much more, which explains why it’s turning up more and more on the East Coast.

It’s also much easier to conceal than traditional marijuana buds, and it’s faster-acting — two traits that count for its increasing appeal over smoking cannabis flowers.

Shatter is like an ultra-strong type of dabs, and it involves vaporizing a form of marijuana wax, derived from butane hash oil, which has been made for centuries.

Some forms of shatter reportedly have as much as 90 percent THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana. 90% means that shatter gives you about five times the potency of unrefined smoked cannabis.

Shatter earned its name because it is produced as a thin, hard, translucent layer similar to glass, which can break if dropped, and it is typically heated and inhaled through a vaporizer rather than smoked.

Despite the fact that shatter is just as safe as regular marijuana when used in the right dosage, authorities are freaking out about its newfound popularity and the difficulty of tracking and regulating it.

Authorities are haunted by the specter of amateurs attempting to make their own, which involves flammable butane gas.

In fact, Colorado has reported a sharp rise in the number of home explosions caused by failed attempts to make butane hash oil.

Opponents of legalized marijuana say that making cannabis more available will lead to more people attempting to create their own more potent oils, such as dabs.
