Why Some Cannabis Users Prefer Schwag Weed

“If I had the choice of smoking a big fat blunt full of mids or a bowl of NYC “heady” weed that costs $60 for a light eighth from some kid on a bike, you know I’d rather smoke that blunt.”

This seems like a strange sentiment to hear from a cannabis user in the golden age for weed.

More and more U.S. states are legalizing or decriminalizing medical and recreational cannabis, with more getting ready to pass similar laws in 2016. Studies are finding more and more medical and medicinal applications for marijuana.

And with all of this growth in the cannabis industry, the quality of the herb is reaching levels that were unimaginable just a few decades ago.

Due to its commercial and medical cultivation, spurred on by competitions and conferences, weed—decked out as meticulously crafted cannabis flowers tinted white with THC crystals—is stronger than it has ever been before.

At first glance, most would assume that the radical increase in the quality and potency of cannabis in the era of legalization would be the best of all possible worlds for regular and heavy marijuana smokers.

Who, as a regular smoker, could complain about the insane quality of bud these days?

It turns out, however, that there’s a growing backlash against super-high-potency cannabis, stemming from the least likely of suspects: regular weed smokers.

Taking a stand—or a leisurely recline—against the conventional wisdom that stronger pot is better pot, some users are beginning to miss the good ‘ole days of cheap, weak marijuana.

Call it shake, schwag, middies, or whatever term: that leafy, seed-ridden, stem-filled bag of dark green, earthy weed. Some regular users are finding they have a soft spot for the shake.

Here’s one regular user, a younger woman, who finds that cheaper weed is more plentiful, social, and fun.

“I like it because it’s not so druggy both in affect and culture. I like deseeding and breaking up weed. The community you smoke this stuff with is generally more relaxed, and you don’t get that high, knocked out, or the anxiety that the dank shit is guaranteed to give you.”

Another committed toker, this time a college dude, found financial reasons for sticking with the less-sticky strains of bud.

“I dealt for so long, and I know there is better weed, but to me it’s just gets you high. I don’t need weed for medical reasons.  If I smoked once a year, I understand splurging. But for people like me who smoke multiple times a day, you’re crazy for spending so much on weed that’s not that much better.”

Others simply prefer the lighter experience provided by weaker cannabis, opting to avoid the sometimes debilitating or anti-social effects of getting stoned on premium buds.

“So many of the strains these days—the second I have to do something—be out in public, hang with my family, or anything like that—it becomes way too much. In my opinion, the only way to actually get a really mellow high is to smoke weed with low, low THC content—i.e. shake.”

So as unlikely as it may seem, some people who’ve been smoking herb for a long time want shittier weed.
