Cannabis Can Help Eliminate ADD/ADHD Symptoms

Patients with Attention Deficit Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder have found marijuana to be effective for treating ADD/ADHD symptoms.

Traditional treatment versus cannabis treatment for ADD/ADHD

Marijuana users are not usually thought of as the most attentive people in society. However, new medical studies are showing cannabis to be an effective method to increase mental focus and clarity. More specifically, patients with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) have found marijuana to be an effective treatment to calm symptoms of ADD/ADHD.

Those with ADD/ADHD experience difficulty focusing, and they are often forgetful. They have a hard time paying attention to detail and can become bored quickly. Learning disabilities are also common side effects.

Traditional methods to treat ADD/ADHD include therapies and support groups, as well as prescription medication such as Adderall and Ritalin.

Unfortunately, as with the case of many prescription drugs, there can be adverse reactions to Adderall and Ritalin.

Many patients who have tried Adderall and Ritalin as a way to treat Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) have experienced adverse side effects such as nervousness, restlessness, dizziness, anxiety, and insomnia.

There is an alternative method to treat symptoms of ADD/ADHD, however. Thanks to recent medical research, doctors, and patients are now looking into the possibility of using cannabis as a treatment for Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Several studies have found cannabis to be a more effective and a much safer means to treat ADD/ADHD, compared to prescription medication.

The compounds in marijuana directly affect the brain, specifically, the dopamine levels found in the brain. Dopamine is a chemical neurotransmitter in the brain that is involved in many cognitive processes, such as mental awareness, focus, and memory.

Doctors have learned that there is a shortage of dopamine in the brains of patients with ADD/ADHD which makes many cognitive functions such as focus, attention, and memory tough.

Adderall and Ritalin stimulate dopamine which promotes concentration and makes these cognitive processes easier. This is great; however, many patients also experience the negative side effects associated with Adderall and Ritalin such as nervousness, restlessness, dizziness, anxiety and insomnia.

Cannabis, however, has been shown to treat symptoms linked to Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), but cannabis does not have any of the adverse side effects that Adderall and Ritalin often do.

Final Hit

Marijuana has been demonstrated to increase the availability of dopamine in patients with ADD/ADHD, which increases the brain’s ability to focus and pay attention to detail without getting bored or distracted. But the benefits of cannabis don’t stop there.

On top of treating symptoms associated with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Cannabis also treats the adverse side effects that often accompany prescription medication such as nervousness and sleep problems.

Studies have shown that even a small dose of cannabis, with a little amount of THC—a compound found in cannabis—can help patients with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Along with the increase of dopamine, patients with ADD/ADHD experience less anxiety and feel calmer when they use marijuana as a treatment.

Right now, Colorado and California are the only two states that allow patients to receive a prescription for medical marijuana to treat Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). But as research continues to shed light on the positive effects cannabis has on our brain. Hopefully, more states will allow marijuana to treat ADD/ADHD.
