Court Hands Out 108-Year Sentence To A 30-Year-Old Caught Selling Weed Online

Was a man in Thailand really just given a 108-year sentence for selling weed? Or were there additional factors in the sentencing?

A criminal court in Thailand just dealt a 108-year sentence to a man found guilty of possession of weed with intent to sell. The man in question is thirty years old. To most people, 108 years is quite a hefty sentence, especially for weed. What exactly is going on here?

The Phitsanulok Provincial Court

A man named Montri Piyapan was sentenced today in the Phitsanulok Provincial Court in Thailand. Piyapan is thirty years old and was found guilty of possession with intent to sell weed.

According to reports, Piyapan had in his possession weed, illegal weapons, and a supply of yaba pills. For those who are unfamiliar, yaba is a combination of caffeine and methamphetamine.

Sold in a pill form, they are reportedly a popular party drug within certain Asian communities in the United States. The name “yaba” translates to “crazy medicine.” That sounds about right.

Additional reports say that Piyapan had been selling the yaba pills and weed through the mail. The police discovered 44 packages containing a total of 71 kilograms of cannabis, as well as 202 pills.

They later searched his home and found another 290 kilograms of pot. In total, Piyapan was found to be in possession of 361 kilograms of weed.

Because of the charge of cannabis possession, Piyapan had a sentence of 15 years in prison and a fine of one million Baht.

This equals roughly USD 30,166. However, there were also 43 charges of intent to sell the drugs. In addition to the 15 years, the Phitsanulok Provincial Court gave two years per intent charge.

They also added another seven years for the yaba pills and weapons. This comes out to a total of 108 years in prison. Additionally, he ended up with a fine of 1.4 million Baht.

He will not have to spend the rest of his life behind bars, however. The Thai Criminal Code mandates a maximum of 50 years for crimes like this. Because Piyapan admitted fault, the judge presiding over his case reduced his sentence to 27 years.

To review, Montri Piyapan was found guilty of possession with intent. A 17-year-old girl was an accomplice in the crimes. She was charged and indicted separately because of her age.

Since the police found Piyapan to be in possession of a total of 361 kilograms of weed, there was no point in trying to dispute the charges. Piyapan admitted to his crime.

While the original consequence for his crime was a 108-year sentence in prison, the law prevents people from spending more than 50 years in prison for offenses like Piyapan’s. He will only spend 27 years in jail.

While 27 years behind bars is nothing to dismiss, there is something to say about this court system. The fact that Piyapan is only spending 27 years in prison for 361 kilograms of weed, 202 yaba pills, and illegal weapons might actually say something positive about the Thai court system. Especially since there are still judiciary systems that sentence weed dealers to death.
