Many parents have intense reactions when they discover a child is smoking weed. But one UK mom recently committed suicide after a violent confrontation with her son and the people who supplied him his weed. According to reports, Susan Underwood, aged 38, killed herself after finding out her son smoked weed. Forensic investigation suggests that Underwood may have been having a mental health episode at the time of her death.

By all accounts, Susan Underwood was a loving mother who reportedly “wrapped her son in cotton wool.” In other words, she was very protective of her 21-year-old son, Brandon Underwood. She was also an entrepreneur and had recently opened a tattoo parlor.
The events leading up to Susan’s death began when she discovered cannabis in her shed at home. After confronting her son Brandon, who denied smoking weed, Susan became distraught.
According to Brandon, “She picked up a kitchen knife and started dragging the tip of it down her arm and her arm bled.” After that, Susan pressed the knife into Brandon’s shoulder.
“She pressed it to me and said ‘are you ready’? I said no because I thought she was going to cut me. She told me to go to bed. That was 2:30 am, and I did,” Brandon said.
Brandon recounts stirring in the early morning and hearing his mother making loud noises downstairs. But he stayed in bed, only waking up around noon.
When he went downstairs a little after 12:05 pm, he found his mother’s lifeless body on the floor between the coffee table and the fireplace.
Mental Health Issues May Have Caused Doting Mom To Take Her Own Life
According to Brandon, his mother Susan was “rarely violent.” But Susan did have a history of mental health issues which began when she lost her father.
Katie Toohey, a registered mental health nurse involved in the case, explained that the tattoo business likely dragged this loving mother over the edge. Toohey thinks Susan wasn’t just a businesswoman who killed herself after finding out her son smoked weed.
Instead, she believes that Susan suffered a severe panic attack before she took her own life. The trigger, Toohey suggests, was the stress from just opening up her own business.

Brandon told reporters that his mother was taking medication for depression and had tested positive for bipolar disorder. And indeed, Brandon had never seen is mother react the way she did after finding his cannabis.
Brandon says Susan never threatened him with a weapon before. Alcohol, he recalls, would make her jumpy, edgy, and aggressive.
Ultimately, coroner Jean Harkin concluded that Susan committed suicide and very likely had severe anger management issues. “It appears her anxiety surfaced again shortly before her death,” Harkin said.
