The infamous virtual marketplace Silk Road has relaunched as Silk Road 3.0, and it’s once again making it possible to buy cannabis and pretty much anything else you can imagine on the dark web.
News of the market’s relaunch first surfaced on Reddit over the weekend.
The original Silk Road website started in 2011. Back then it was known as one of the most reliable places to buy illegal drugs and other black market goods from vendors around the world.
Silk Road maintained its secrecy by operating on the dark web. Sites on the dark web are not indexed by search engines and require specialized software to access.
By 2012, the website was reportedly handling $15 million worth of transactions. But in 2013, the whole thing fell apart.
That year, the site was seized by the FBI. Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht was also arrested and sentenced to two life sentences plus 30 years.
But the new Silk Road 3.0 says it’s bringing back a dark web marketplace very similar to the original.
The new site is already full of vendors advertising cannabis as well as scores of other drugs like heroin, meth, and cocaine. There are also vendors selling black market software, subscription accounts to sites like PayPal and Netflix, and much more.
“We are the most well-known and resilient marketplace on the dark net, and one of the oldest and most secure having lasted the test of time,” the new site says.
“You will find everything that you desire here. Please obey our rules and observe proper security practices while you are here.”
Despite all this, there are already suspicions that Silk Road 3.0 might be a set-up.
Toward the end of 2015 a different version of Silk Road—this one called Silk Road Reloaded—mysteriously shut down. At the time, there were rumors that the site was being monitored by the FBI.
And apparently there are early reports of some Silk Road 3.0 users who have already had problems getting products from vendors. This has led many to become suspicious of the new site.
Of course, the more that cannabis becomes legal, the fewer people will need black market sources like Silk Road to get their cannabis.
