Who is Kendrick Lamar?
Kendrick Lamar Duckworth was born in raised in Compton, California. He originally decided to pursue music in his early teens, under the stage guise K-Dot. Lamar released two more mixtapes, with his third one being co-signed by Lil Wayne. He eventually decided to go by his actual birth name in 2009, when he released his most famous mixtape, “The Kendrick Lamar EP.”
In 2011, Lamar released his first independent album “Section.80.” It was met with critical and fan acclaim alike. After that album, West Coast legends Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre referred to Kendrick as “the new king of the west coast.”
Lamar eventually went even more mainstream by signing with Interscope Records and Dr. Dre’s Aftermath Entertainment in 2012. That year, he released his second studio album “good kid, m.A.A.d city,” with more critical acclaim. It debuted at number two in the U.S.
Lamar released his third album “To Pimp a Butterfly” in 2015, with similarly astounding reviews, and this fourth album “DAMN” this past April. To sum it all up, the seven time Grammy winner is set to go down as one of the most iconic rappers of this generation.

In several interviews, Lamar has stated that he doesn’t, in fact, smoke weed. Despite having a bunch of songs that mention the act of smoking, the California rapper claims he does not indulge. In fact, he says he wasn’t even a regular smoker back before he made it big.
“I used to smoke,” Lamar said. ” wasn’t ever a dependen. A lot of people use it as a dependen, they wake up in the morning angry . It never was a dependent for me, so it never was a crutch, really.”
His father was apparently a big influence on Lamar’s decision to be sober.
“My father said, ‘I don’t want you to be like me. Things I have done, mistakes I’ve made, I never want you to make those mistakes. You can wind up out on the corner.’” Lamar said in an interview with SPIN.
