Does Lena Dunham Smoke Weed?

She’s the creator of one of the most controversial television shows of the decade, but does Lena Dunham smoke weed? Let’s find out.

While the HBO show “Girls” has ended, that doesn’t mean you’re still not asking the question: Does Lena Dunham smoke weed? Well, well, dear reader, you came to the right place to find out. Let’s see if the woman who once posited herself as “a voice…of a generation” prefers to puff or pass.

Who is Lena Dunham?

Born on May 13, 1986, in New York City, New York, Dunham grew up as an almost archetypal city kid. Her parents are Carroll Dunham, a painter, and Laurie Simmons, a photographer.

As a child, Dunham attended the prestigious Saint Anne’s School in Brooklyn. The filmmaker then attended the New School for one year before transferring to Oberlin College in Ohio.

In was during her time at Oberlin that Dunham completed three short films before she had even graduated. South by Southwest accepted a short film called “Creative Nonfiction.” This marked her festival debut.

After that, Dunham began working on her breakout pièce de résistance: the full-length feature film “Tiny Furniture.” The movie, whose cast included Kirke, along with supporting performances by Dunham’s mother and sister Grace, became an indie hit.

Dunham’s success eventually caught the eye of famous comedy director Judd Apatow. Teaming up with Apatow and showrunner Jennifer Konner, Dunham pitched “Girls,” a TV comedy-drama about four millennial women making ends meet in New York City.

The show, which aired for six seasons, was lauded for its realistic treatment of its subject matter. It also drew attention for Dunham’s displays of nudity in the show, which were considered groundbreaking for depicting the “imperfect” female body by Hollywood standards.

Dunham is also an author. Her memoir “Not That Kind of Girl,” published in 2014, became a New York Times bestseller. But back to our main question: Does Lena Dunham smoke weed?

Puff or Pass?

Does Lena Dunham Smoke Weed?

With a reputation as a pot-stirrer, it’s no surprise that Dunham has thoughts on cannabis. Or, more accurately, publicly had words about the weed habits of another star.

About who, you might ask? None other than pop star Rihanna. What made it worse was that it came up in discussion over her romantic reunion with singer Chris Brown in 2013, after the latter was outed as a domestic abuser.

In a podcast interview with fellow actor Alec Baldwin, Dunham expressed her dismay over Rihanna’s choice to resume a relationship with Brown years after she left him, posting photographs of her beaten and bruised face on social media.

“I used to be really into Rihanna, that pop star…but I follow her on Instagram, and I just think about how many little girls beyond what I could even comprehend are obsessed with Rihanna,” Dunham said.

“She’s had this amazing career; she’s won a Grammy, she’s talented. And then she gets back together with Chris Brown and posts a million pictures of them smoking marijuana together on a bed. And it cracks my heart in half in a way that makes me feel like I’m 95 years old.”

Rihanna, a known stoner, did not respond to Dunham’s criticism at the time—but that didn’t mean Dunham’s remarks went unnoticed.

But it was Dunham’s slight against current victims and survivors of domestic abuse that took center stage. The maelstrom even solicited comments from preeminent feminist Gloria Steinem.

“Most women leaving violent relationships return at least once because their self-authority has been eviscerated and replaced with a partner’s authority,” said Steinem, who disagreed with Dunham. “Think Stockholm Syndrome. Rihanna probably needs support, not criticism.”

Final Hit: Does Lena Dunham Smoke Weed?

So yes, her statement about smoking seemed disparaging—which, quite frankly, was rightly second fiddle to the issues Steinem pointed out. Despite this, it doesn’t mean that Dunham has never hit a bong or a joint before.

In a profile of the showrunner/actor/author published by the Hollywood Reporter right before the Rihanna controversy, Dunham waxed poetic about her halcyon days at Oberlin College. Unsurprisingly, she threw pot into the mix.

“When you’re in a creative writing program at a school in Ohio, there’s nothing to do but read and smoke marijuana,” Dunham joked. While it’s not necessarily a flat-out admission, it sure leaves the matter up for debate.

So, does Lena Dunham smoke weed? From the evidence at hand, we can’t say for sure.
