Does Steven Avery Smoke Weed?

He may or may not be a murderer, but does Steven Avery smoke weed? We decided to do our own investigation.

You’re probably wondering: Does Steven Avery smoke weed? The Wisconsin man, who was the focus of the 2015 Netflix documentary series “Making a Murderer,” has had more than his fair share of legal trouble in the past. But was he a casual weed-smoker on the rare occasions he wasn’t behind bars?

Who is Steven Avery?

If you haven’t watched “Making a Murderer,” you probably have no idea who Avery is. The now-55-year-old Avery was convicted of sexual assault and attempted murder back in 1985, despite having a sound alibi.

Penny Beerntsen, the victim, picked Avery out of both a photo lineup and live lineup. Despite Avery being over 40 miles away shortly after the attack, he was charged with rape and attempted murder. As a result, he was sentenced to 32 years in prison.

Avery served 18 years out of his 32-year sentence and was released on September 11, 2003. He was aided by the Wisconsin Innocence Project, who used DNA testing to prove it was another man—Gregory Allen.

However, Avery found himself as the subject of another high-profile case just two years later, this time for the murder of photographer Teresa Halbach.

She was last seen on the grounds of the Avery family salvage yard, which was located on a 40-acre piece of land. She was there to purchase a minivan from Avery.

After being arrested for her murder, Avery believed he was being framed. Avery was ultimately sentenced to life in prison without parole in 2007.

His young nephew, Brendan Dassey, admitted to the murder, but his conviction was overturned on the grounds that his confession had been coerced. Avery’s own conviction was upheld by higher courts, but a new series of motions were filed in January of 2016.

Puff or Pass?

So back to the question at hand: Does Steven Avery smoke weed? There’s not much evidence to suggest he does or ever did. However, there is a rampant fan theory to suggest there’s a slight possibility.

The Reddit fan theory suggests there was more to the Avery’s 40-acre property than meets the eye. It is believed that the land was highly valuable, and part of the theory claims that there was an illegal weed farm growing on the plot of land.

It is believed that Teresa stumbled upon the drugs, and she paid for it with her life. While the premise is somewhat of a stretch, Teresa had apparently told friends and family close to her that someone had been threatening her life.

This hypothesis is far from concrete, but it does raise an interesting possibility.

On the topic of weed: Avery’s sister was arrested for misdemeanor possession back in 2005. While this doesn’t indict Steven, it is interesting to note, especially in light of the fan theory.

Final Hit: Does Steven Avery Smoke Weed?

With the lack of facts, it’s tough to say Avery smokes weed. Considering he’s been incarcerated for the greater portion of the last two decades, it would certainly be tough for Avery to spark up regularly.

While the fan theory is an interesting tidbit to consider, it’s far from a sure-thing. So we are going to have to go with a resounding “no” on this one. For once in his life, it looks like Avery is innocent until proven guilty.
