How to Make A Sploof: Step-by-Step Guide

Looking to make your own sploof?

What could be more classic than blowing smoke through a makeshift sploof constructed out of a cardboard tube stuffed full of paper towels and dryer sheets? This has been the go-to technique for smokers trying to hide the smell of pot from parents or college dorm RAs for decades.

But anyone familiar with these homemade contraptions is also probably familiar with their ineffectiveness. And while you can now purchase factory-made sploofs and air filters designed specifically for weed smokers, there’s also a better way to make your own super effective, easy to build sploof right at home.

Here’s what you’ll need to make your Sploof:

  • A drill (don’t worry, this makes the whole thing sound more intense than it really is)
  • 1/2″ drill bit
  • 1/8″ drill bit
  • Active charcoal (at least 6 ounces)
  • 2 Coffee filters
  • Large empty prescription bottles (look for one that’s around 5″ long)

Now that you’ve got your materials together, here’s how to make the world’s most effective sploof:

1. Make the Mouth Airhole

Use the 1/2″ drill bit to drill a hole into the bottom of the container. Be sure you’re drilling into the bottom of the container, not the removable top piece.

2. Make Sploof Filter Holes

Now flip the medicine container over and use the smaller drill bit to drill 10-20 small holes into the lid of the container.

3. Make the Sploof Filter

Carefully fold your coffee filter and press it into the bottom of the container (against the mouth airhole). You might want to use a butter knife or some other long tool to make sure the filter gets pressed all the way down so that it’s completely covering the bottom of the container.

4. Fill Your Sploof With Charcoal

With the coffee filter firmly in place, use a funnel to fill the container with activated charcoal. Be sure you leave enough space at the top of the container for another folded-up coffee filter, and also be sure you can still close the lid.

Tip: The easiest place to get activated charcoal is from a pet supplies store—people use it to filter water in their fish tanks.

5. Finish Your Sploof

After you’ve dumped in your charcoal, top off the container with another crumpled up coffee filter and snap or screw the lid back on.

Your sploof is now ready to use!

6. Smoke Up and Filter Your Smoke

Now go ahead and take a hit from a pipe or bong (don’t use something that continues burning like a joint or spliff). When you’re ready to exhale, blow slowly and steadily through the mouth air hole in the bottom of your sploof.

The combination of coffee filters and activated charcoal will actually filter the air that passes through it, not just masks the smell the way those sh*tty old cardboard-and-dryer-sheet sploofs do.

Now the next time you’re smoking up in your dorm room, your friends will think you’re a pot pro when you bust out this fancy new sploof.
