Making Cannabis-Infused Rum

With so many ways to make edibles and drinkables, there is no need to let your cannabis consumption fall into a rut. Making cannabis-infused rum is a surefire way to mix things up and keep things interesting. Once you have a batch, you can drink it as-is, or use it to create incredible cannabis-infused cocktails. Here are two methods for making cannabis-infused rum.

Method One: High Tech

This recipe is full of gadgets and gizmos and is sure to please all hands-on creators and culinary artists. Not to mention you’ll impress all your friends at the dinner party when you whip out some of this fancy kitchen gear. As long as you have the necessary equipment, the method is simple.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • A one-liter heat-tolerant whipped-cream whipper (these run roughly $90-100)
  • Two nitrous oxide chargers (N2O)
  • A double boiler large enough to fit the whipper in
  • Rum with a high alcohol content
  • An eighth of your favorite cannabis strain

Note: You can alter the potency of the final product by going with higher proof rum or strains with different levels of THC.

Step 1: Bake the Cannabis

Use a grinder to break apart the buds and spread them over aluminum foil or parchment paper on a baking sheet. Bake at 220 degrees F for 40-50 minutes. This decarboxylates the cannabis and activates all those cannabinoids. Be sure to keep the temperature low, so you don’t burn the herb.

Step 2: Load the Whipper

Combine the decarboxylated bud with the rum in the whipper. Follow the N2O instructions to charge the whipper. Let it sit for 5 minutes.

Step 3: Vent Out Gas

Before going any further, you need to vent off all the remaining gas to bubbles. A few minutes of stirring should do the trick.

Step 4: Simmer

Seal the whipper with the cannabis-rum mixture and place in a double boiler. Simmer this on low heat for one hour. Always keep an eye on your work.

Step 5: Strain and Enjoy…Carefully

Strain the plant matter from the cannabis-infused liquid. Use a cheesecloth and discard the chunks. The remaining liquid is your infused rum.

Cannabis-infused alcohol like this is sometimes known as green or golden dragon. And they got those names for a reason. Always drink responsibly.

Method Two: For the Casual Home Cook

All the fancy gadgets are well and good. But if you’re more laid back, or if you do not have all the necessary kitchen tools for the above recipe, this next method is the way to go.

Some people do not like this method because it leaves a thicker consistency or murky liquid that is not appealing or palatable for some. Those who are picky about the floaters are probably the type to have a whipped-cream whipper already in their cupboards. But if you don’t mind a slightly more “rustic” final product, read on.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • An eighth of decarboxylated marijuana
  • Rum, 80 proof and up
  • Mason jar
  • Coffee filter or cheesecloth
  • A bottle with a dropper for storage

Step 1: Bake the Cannabis

Refer to step one above to decarboxylate the bud. This is a necessary step any time you are baking or cooking with cannabis.

Step 2: Put Cannabis and Rum in Mason Jar

This step is self-explanatory: Combine the ingredients and put the lid on the jar.

Step 3: Store

The one downside to this method is that it takes time. Maybe too much time. You need to let the mixture sit for at least one week. During this time, the most important cannabinoids will infuse into the liquor.

But if you are in a hurry and you cannot wait that long, you can simmer the jar in a water bath for 20 minutes at about 170 degrees F. As soon as it’s done, move on to the rest of the steps.

Step 4: Shake

Check on that baby, give it a little shimmy. Make sure to do this every day. Alternatively, if you went with the shorter, boiling method, be sure to give the jar a good shake as soon as it is cool enough to handle.

Step 5: Filter and Save

Using a cheesecloth or coffee filter, separate the liquor from the weed. The result is a jarful of cannabis-infused rum. You should consume it in small doses at first until you are comfortable with the results. You can now use this rum to make highballs and cocktails.

Bonus Recipe: Cannabis Caramel Infused Cuba Libre

I once watched a bartender in England liquidize caramel over a small burner, set it on fire, and poor it over a dark liquid on the rocks. When I tasted it, I thought I’d never had anything better.

When I asked what he had made (preface: when I ordered I said “surprise me”), he told me I was drinking a spruced-up rum and coke. That made it seem lackluster, and the magic nearly died — that is until I took another sip and realized how amazing it was.

There are three different approaches you can take to creating this simple and delicious cocktail. And when you use your cannabis-infused rum, your cocktail will have the added benefit of being a weed drinkable.

Ingredients

  • 1.5-3 fluid ounces of cannabis-infused rum or regular rum (difference is a single or a double)
  • 3-4 ounces of Coca-Cola (you could also add cannabis simple syrup)
  • 1 ounce of heated caramel syrup or liquid.

Note: Use the cannabis-infused alcohol as you would when making a normal cocktail, just with a bit more caution. Potency may vary.

Mixology

  1. Over a burner, heat the caramel until it is a nice liquid consistency.
  2. Add ice to a cocktail glass.
  3. Pour in cannabis-infused rum
  4. Add Coca-cola (As an alternative to the cannabis-infused rum, you could add cannabis simple syrup instead)
  5. Slowly add hot caramel
  6. Stir gently using spoon
  7. Garnish with a wedge of lime
  8. Enjoy your cannacocktail!
