Montel Williams Detained For Medical Marijuana

Long Story Short

American TV personality Montel Williams was detained after German border officials found medical marijuana in his luggage. Williams was released a short time later after he showed authorities his prescription for the cannabis.

The Details

Williams and his wife were on summer vacation last week in Europe. When they tried to travel through the Frankfurt airport, authorities found marijuana in his suitcase. Williams has used medical cannabis since he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) back in 1999.

Airport security initially detained Williams. But after he showed them his official prescription for medical cannabis and explained his situation, authorities eventually let the couple continue on their way.

“His medical marijuana prescription is legitimate,” Williams’ representative, Jonathan Franks, told the media. ” written by a world class neurologist world renowned for his expertise in MS.”

From all accounts, the entire thing went quite smoothly. The short detainment came to a quick end, and the German officials didn’t hassle the couple too badly.

Montel’s Cannabis Activism

Williams has used his personal experiences with MS to establish himself as an outspoken and public supporter of medical cannabis. And it sounds like his experience last week has fired him up even more.

From the sounds of things, Williams was struck by the obvious fact that he was detained simply for carrying the medicine he relies on. Through his spokesperson, he said that these kinds of experiences are part of the everyday struggles patients face as a result of the criminalization of cannabis.

But at the same time, he was also aware of how quickly German officials accepted his prescription and his explanation for why he had marijuana.

“They treated him like a person with a serious illness, not a criminal,” Franks said. “Montel’s commitment to the fight for common sense marijuana reform has never been stronger.”

Cannabis And Multiple Sclerosis

Many people with MS have turned to medical cannabis as a way of coping with the disorder. According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, a handful of studies has suggested that marijuana could be helpful for folks with MS.

In particular, medical cannabis has shown promise as a way of treating the muscle stiffness, pains, spasms, and sleep problems that often come with MS.

But the Society also says that more research is needed before they can reach any definite conclusions. The group supports patients’ rights to use cannabis to treat MS. It also advocates for more research into the ways marijuana can help people with MS.
