As is widely known, James Madison is the “Father of the Constitution.”

Like his contemporaries, Madison farmed hemp. But he may have also enjoyed smoking it.

Famously, Madison once seemed to suggest that cannabis had helped inspire his dream of a new democratic republic.

Unfortunately, there isn’t enough data to know for sure whether Madison actually got high writing the Constitution.

One can only wonder.

4. James Monroe

James Monroe openly celebrated smoking marijuana.

In fact, as Ambassador to France, Monroe frequently smoked hash.

No doubt, Monroe’s habits made him a popular figure among the more progressive French.

Furthermore, smoking hash was a habit Monroe maintained until his death.

Monroe died at the age of 73.
