North Dakota Legalizes Medical Marijuana

Tuesday marked a historic day for marijuana across the country. Residents of North Dakota voted decisively in favor of permitting medical marijuana.

Tuesday marked a historic day for marijuana all across the country. The citizens of 4 different states put the question of medical marijuana on their ballots. And in every single state, the respective measure passed. Among them was North Dakota.

The measure that was ultimately approved is called the “North Dakota Medical Marijuana Legalization Initiative,” or “Measure 5” for short. Due to its passing, qualified patients can now legally obtain marijuana through a physician for a range of different ailments. We’ve got the details for you below.

North Dakota Measure 5 Passes With Flying Colors

Residents of North Dakota voted decisively in favor of permitting medical marijuana. Of the roughly 330 thousand who voted, 220 thousand decided to approve the measure. The overwhelming support for the initiative, coming out to more than 63%, marks a landslide victory for the legislation.

Although the measure passed, medical marijuana can only be prescribed if a patient meets a specific criterion. Luckily, the list of qualifying conditions is fairly comprehensive. Patients with the following ailments can receive a prescription for medical marijuana in the state of North Dakota:

Also, the language of the bill allows for marijuana’s prescription for “a chronic or debilitating disease or medical condition or its treatment that produces one or more of the following.” This list includes:

Plus, the state’s health department can expand the conditions necessary at any time. This will allow for even more ailments to be added to the list of qualifying conditions in the future. Not only has North Dakota approved the use of medical marijuana, but it has done so in a way that can treat a wide range of people who may need it.

The Final Hit

North Dakota is just one of many states whose citizens have realized that the benefits of marijuana as medicine are too good to pass up. The expansive list of qualifying conditions speaks to an electorate that knows cannabis’s medicinal potential.

9 states voted on expanding access to marijuana in some form on Tuesday, and 6 won. Furthermore, in every state that proposed medical marijuana, it passed. While the 3 bills that were defeated is an unfortunate setback, this event still marks a monumental victory for the legal cannabis movement.
