6-Year-Old Cut From Basketball Team Because His Dad Smelled Like Weed

DeShaun Johns lost his spot on the “Thunder,” a Detroit Junior Athletic Association basketball team, after multiple incidents involving his father.

DeShaun’s father reportedly arrived to games smelling of marijuana. The athletic association found his smell inappropriate.

William Craig Johns, DeShaun’s grandfather, said DeShaun’s father came to one of his games smelling of marijuana and was asked to leave.

DeShaun left without incident. But weeks later, he returned to the gym again smelling of marijuana.

He was again asked to leave.

But according to Johns, DeShaun’s father has a medical marijuana card. Medical marijuana is legal in Michigan for a small number of qualifying conditions. However, the state does not have any licensed dispensaries, although patients can grow their own cannabis with few restrictions.

The second time DeShaun’s father was asked to leave, he got upset. The grandfather said DeShaun’s father had a verbal argument with a school official who asked him to leave.

“He did rip up a dollar or something and kind of threw it towards her, and she said she was assaulted by him,” Johns said.

Despite the fact that DeShaun was allowed to play in two more games after the incident, his family was told DeShaun was removed from the team after the two games.

“Why did they let him play in 2 more games and let it go on for so long before they decided to kick him off?” DeShaun’s grandfather asked.

In a statement released to Detroit’s local news agencies, the athletic association said:

“The dismissal of the family from our basketball program was a direct result of actions and threats made by the student athlete’s father. This incident fell under restrictions stated in our code of conduct. Unfortunately, we were unable to retain the student athlete. This was a decision that was not taken lightly, and was only made final after several attempts were made to resolve the situation with the parents.”

There were no charges filed, and it appears DeShaun’s father was not guilty of any crime.
