States That Do Not Allow Both A Medical Marijuana And Gun License

There is a long list of states that do not allow both a medical marijuana and gun license. Take a look at which states remain lax on their gun policies, but strict on cannabis.

In the United States, there is a laundry list of states that do not allow both a medical marijuana and gun license. In the U.S., having the right to smoke weed does not go hand-in-hand with owning your own gun. For the states that don’t require a license to purchase a gun, getting medical cannabis is downright impossible. More than impossible, it’s illegal.  Below is a comprehensive list of states that do not allow both a medical marijuana and gun license.

List of States That Do Not Allow Both A Medical Marijuana And Gun License

States That Do Not Allow Both A Medical Marijuana And Gun License
These are the states that do not allow both a medical marijuana and gun license:

Alabama

In Alabama, weed is a no-no. Obviously, however, guns are OK. There are no licenses required to purchase or possess a gun. However, you will need a carry permit.

Georgia

No form of cannabis is legal in Georgia yet. The only gun permit you need is for concealed and open carry. Otherwise, you can purchase and own guns as you like.

Idaho

Medical marijuana is also not yet legal in Idaho. However, buying and owning guns is fine. The only permit needed is for an open carry.

Indiana

A medical marijuana license is not available in Indiana. There are also no restrictions on purchasing and owning a gun.

The only licenses required are open carry permits for both long guns and handguns and concealed carry permits for handguns.

Kansas

Kansas is also behind the times when it comes to medicinal cannabis. The only permit required in Kansas is for open carry of both long guns and handguns.

Kentucky

Cannabis for medicinal purposes in Kentucky is a problem, but owning a gun sure isn’t.

There are no permits or licenses required to buy and own a gun. You do, however, need permits for concealed carry of a handgun and open carry of all guns.

Mississippi

Mississippi is also behind the times regarding medical cannabis. In terms of gun licensing, no permit or license is required other than for open carry.

Missouri

Missouri also does not allow medical marijuana cards, but the state has no problem issuing guns. The only permit needed is for open carry of any firearm.

Oklahoma

In Oklahoma, even private sales of guns are legal. But medical marijuana is not. Concealed and open carrying a handgun are the only thing you need permits for.

However, short-barreled rifles and shotguns are now illegal unless registered under the NFA (National Firearms Act).

South Dakota

South Dakota is another state with strict cannabis laws and loose gun laws. In fact, it’s one of the worst states to get caught with weed.

Carry permits are only needed for handguns, and open carry permits are needed for all firearms. Otherwise, purchasing and owning a gun is as easy as 1-2-3.

South Carolina

Again, no license or permit is needed to buy and own a gun in South Carolina. Meanwhile, cannabis is illegal. Only a permit is needed for the open carry of a long firearm, and the concealed carry for a handgun.

Tennessee

Tennessee is another state in which medical marijuana has yet to become legal. However, there is no such problem for buying and owning. The only permits needed are for the concealed carry of a handgun, and open carry for all firearms.

Texas

Cannabis is still not legal in the state of Texas. It just so happens that no license is needed to purchase and own any firearm.

However, a license is necessary for the open carry of said firearms, and the concealed carry of a handgun.

Utah

Medical marijuana licenses are still not available in Utah, either. There are no permits or licenses necessary to buy or own a gun, but one must have a permit to carry any firearm in public—concealed or open.

Virginia

Virginia is another state that has yet to embrace the green rush, even for medicinal purposes. But if you want to grab a gun, fine.

The only permits you need are for the concealed carry of a handgun and the open carry of all firearms.

West Virginia

Like Virginia, West Virginia is strict on cannabis and light on guns. But unlike Virginia, you only need permits for open carry.

Wisconsin

Wisconsin has no laws legalizing medical cannabis either. The state requires carrying permits for all firearms, and a concealed carry permit for handguns. Otherwise, buying and owning a gun is A-Ok.

Wyoming

Last but not least, Wyoming is the last member of this list that hasn’t yet embraced medical marijuana as a viable option.

Additionally, buying and owning a gun without a license is legal. All you need are open carry permits. That’s it.

Final Hit: States That Do Not Allow Both A Medical Marijuana And Gun License

States That Do Not Allow Both a Medical Marijuana and Gun License

As you can see, it’s almost downright impossible to have easy access to a gun and medical marijuana. There are states, however, where medical marijuana is legal, but you need a license to purchase firearms.

Unfortunately, the federal government still considers cannabis a drug and wants to make it illegal to purchase firearms if you have a medical card. Hopefully one day, it won’t be impossible to heal yourself with cannabis and also own a gun. But for right now, the two are essentially mutually exclusive.
