7 Reasons Scooby-Doo Was Made For Stoners

If you have an innocent mind you may have watched Scooby-Doo and never realized it was made for stoners. The show kept it subtle enough to remain on the air. However, if you smoke weed you may have noticed some of the stoner innuendoes. If you don’t believe us, we’ve gathered some compelling evidence that proves Scooby-Doo was made for stoners.

1. Maryjane

7 Reasons Scooby Doo Was Made For Stoners

The makers of the live-action Scooby-Doo movie who probably had to watch the show extensively for research seemed to think it was for stoners. There’s a scene that clearly hints at Shaggy’s love for marijuana. He’s on a plane seated next to a blonde that shares his interest for “Scooby Snacks.”

“My name is Maryjane,” she tells Shaggy. He looks shocked and replies, “like, that is my favorite name.” If that isn’t proof that Shaggy loves weed we don’t know what is.

2. Hotboxing the Mystery Machine

There’s another scene where Shaggy and Scooby are in the mystery machine with smoke pouring out the top. They’re then seen grilling up some munchies. That’s a creative way for the creators to play off the smoke. However, the joke continues when the two start freaking out when detectives start banging on the van door. Typical reaction of anyone that smokes weed if you ask us.

3. The Munchies

Shaggy and Scooby had an appetite like no one else. Stoners are known for the same thing. That and ridiculous food combinations. Let us not forget the time Shaggy put together a double triple decker sardine and marshmallow fudge sandwich.

“There’s nothing I like better than food unless it’s more food.” – Shaggy

It was a pattern in every episode that Scooby Doo and Shaggy were always hungry AF. We don’t see why the creators would emphasize this so much especially with the most dazed and confused characters. In a nutshell, Shaggy and Scooby were simpletons with bottomless stomachs. They sure sound like the stereotypical stoner.

4. Scoobie “DOOBIE” Doo

This one speaks for itself. They call him Scooby “Doobie” Doo for a reason. Judging by his mannerisms and appetite, a doobie he does indeed. The term Doobie was a popular slang word for a marijuana cigarette or joint during the 70’s. Probably not coincidentally, the series is meant to take place around the same time.

You know when you’re so about something you tell someone it’s your middle name? For example, if one hippy asks “Hey man, can you roll us a doobie?” another might reply, “Ya man, Doobie is my middle name.” The writers were probably trying to clue us in on what Scooby was all about.

5. Hippy Van

The Mystery Machine is a Hippy Van if we’ve ever seen one. It’s even decked out with the Flower-power paint job. Hippies were known to openly enjoy smoking weed. Shaggy and Scooby Doo both spend a lot of time in the back of that van doing what we assume causes their munchies.

6. Shaggy, I mean come on

The characters in this cartoon are all from the same place but something set Shaggy apart. He talks and acts like a spaced out hippy. Similar to the character Leo from “That 70’s Show,” who is permanently lost and excessively uses the word “like.” Shaggy is usually the first to fall for a trap because he’s equally as confused. When the gang is making a serious observation he offers a silly explanation.

They make him seem like a dingus most of the time and he has the appetite of a dog. There’s no way a dude that skinny is pounding that much food down without the help of pot. Did we mention he’s the only one talking to the dog? That may be a little more than THC though. You can’t hallucinate from cannabis but Hippies were also known to experiment with acid which can make you see or hear just about anything.

7. Pothead Scene in Scooby-Doo

A strong hint lies in Scooby-Doo, Where are You! the animated series season 1, episode 12: Scooby-Doo and A Mummy, Too. At one point Shaggy and Scooby are the only two characters to throw actual pots on their heads for protection. Is it safe for us to call them potheads yet?
