“Super Troopers 2” Gets A Weed-Inspired 420 Release Date

As “Super Troopers 2” gets a weed-inspired 420 release date, we have to wonder what kind of shenanigans can we expect from the beloved “altered state troopers”?

“Super Troopers” has built up something of a cult following—especially among weed smokers. In fact, it’s hard to believe the original “Super Troopers” movie came out 16 years ago. That’s a testament to its staying power as a cult comedy classic. And now, the film is staying true to its cannabis roots, as the sequel “Super Troopers 2” gets a weed-inspired 420 release date.

Today, the movie’s gut-busting lines are part of the pop culture lexicon. So no wonder rumors about the imminent release of a sequel have sent the internet meowing with anticipation.

But the best part of the news so far are hints about when exactly movie-goers can sit down with a bucket of snozzberries and a liter of cola. If we can take actor Steve Lemme (“Mac”) at his word, it sounds like “Super Troopers 2” is getting a weed-inspired 420 release date.

April 20 is the perennial weed holiday known simply as 420. On that day, most marijuana lovers are out celebrating at cannabis parties across the country. But next year, thousands of them will probably be in a movie theater watching the sequel to one of the greatest stoner classics ever made.

Yes, the long-awaited return of every pot fan’s favorite “altered state troopers” is slated for 420 next year. At least, if we’re picking up what Steve Lemme is putting down.

In a recent interview with Seven Days, Lemme teased about a release date. But he said he couldn’t officially say what it was. Instead, he dropped some hints. Lemme said the movie would come out in the spring on “a very obvious date, which happens to fall on a Friday this year.”

Fridays are traditional release-dates for major pictures. But there is one spring Friday in 2018 that stands out among the rest. It isn’t hard to guess that Lemme means “Super Troopers 2” will drop on the highly celebrated weed holiday.

The movie wrapped production in July, thanks to a crowdfunding campaign that raised $4.4 million. Between Anderson’s “Isle of Dogs” and “Super Troopers 2,” Fox Searchlight will cover all ends of the indie-movie spectrum.

From tween, disaffected whimsy to hilarious, stoner absurdity, 420 season next year looks stacked with indie blockbusters.

One only hopes that the “Super Troopers” sequel will live up to the hype and at least equal the comedic genius of the first. And so far, things look promising.

For example, Uproxx reported that Rob Lowe will make a cameo appearance in the new film. Similarly, country music legend and cannabis icon Willie Nelson will likely make an appearance as well.

Beyond those details, the IMDb page for “Super Troopers 2” leaves much to speculation. And the crew has been intent on keeping things under wraps. They’ve been shooting on-location in Massachusetts under the title “Almond Benefits 2.”

The Final Hit: “Super Troopers 2” Gets A Weed-Inspired 420 Release Date

Eight months may be an excruciatingly long time to wait for “Super Troopers 2” to finally hit theaters. But fans have been waiting since the initial crowd-funding campaign green lighted the movie back in March of 2015.

But if “Super Troopers” 2 gets a weed-inspired 420 release date, the time is meow to get psyched for this long-anticipated sequel. Come 420 next year, let the shenanigans begin!
