AK-47 Strain Information

Few assault rifles are more iconic than the Kalashnikov AK-47. Efficient and reliable, the Kalashnikov is just as popular today as it was 50 years ago. And like its namesake, the sativa-dominant hybrid strain AK-47 is one of the most popular types of weed available today. But while the thought of the banana-clip-sporting firearm might conjure images of violence and chaos, AK-47 – the strain – is going to produce a high that’s heady, relaxing, and mellow.

That’s because of AK-47’s elevated levels of THC. While the average sativahybrid strain typically offers 12.5% THC content, an average nug contains 15% THC. Some exceptional varieties of the strain can soar as high as 20% THC – that’s a potent strain!

That mind-body separation is part of what makes getting stoned with AK-47 feel like such a stimulus to your creativity. Your mind is overflowing with ideas. The world around takes on the surreal qualities of a dream or the set of some fantastical movie.

And while AK-47 is a reward for your mind, it’s also a feast for the senses. Sure, the dank, pungent, natural flavors may be an acquired taste. But a lingering sweetness in the after-taste, with echoes of sweet floral notes, is there for those who know how to find it.

Clearly, smokers do, because AK-47 continues to be a commercial success and a favorite among growers for its resin-rich buds and short indoor flowering time. Buds of this strain are so coated with resin, that it has earned the nickname “Winter Wonderland.”

In fact, AK-47 is grown almost exclusively as an indoor strain, because it only takes about two months to flower. It’s also versatile: you can use soil or a hydro setup to grow it. Outside grows typically have to wait several months for a healthy yield.

No information on AK-47 would be complete, however, without a short history lesson. The Kalashnikov, after all, has made history in armed struggles all over the world.

Even though AK-47 didn’t come into existence as a strain until 1992 (by Serious Seeds), it has a truly global ancestry. The strain is a hybrid of a complicated parentage that mixes Colombian, Mexican, and Thai sativa strains with an Afghani indica.

So the next time you come across these dark, resinous, compact buds that bristle with red hairs and glistening trichomes, make sure to take aim and fire… it up!
