The Most Popular Cannabis Products of 2016

Long Story Short

From vapor pens to carbonated cannabis beverages, there’s a lot of ways to get high in 2016. Although Cannabis in flower form is still the most popular marijuana product in states where it is legal, there are many new ways to get high that are rising in popularity.

With states that have medical marijuana laws forbidding the sale or growth of marijuana in its flower form, cannabis products that are in gum or beverage form may instead become the standard way for people to get high.

Vapor Pens

Even though flower is the most popular, it is one of the least profitable cannabis products on the market. Vapor pens coming in 5th best combine consumer popularity with high margins. More than half of the top 15 cannabis products are pre-rolls or edibles making the margins for products that makes cannabis consumption elevated in the 21st century.

Edibles

Edibles rank second in popularity, but they may not be the edibles you’re thinking of. There’s a list of edibles that are more popular than the favorite pot brownie. Chocolates, candy, lozenges, cookies, and gum are the most popular forms of edibles in the past year. Herb-infused beverages are the next most popular edible, and they have been seeing the most growth in the edibles category from June 2015 – May 2016.

With a growth of about 24% per month, carbonated marijuana beverages seem like they may catch up to candy, lozenge, and gum sales by the end of this year.

Resin

The product seeing the most growth this year is a cannabis concentrate called Live Resin. The drier the cannabis plant is allowed to become the more terpenes are lost. Terpenes are responsible for the flavor of cannabis. To avoid this loss Live Resin is made by taking freshly snipped cannabis nugs and freezing them before extraction to preserve as much of the original terpenes as possible. Live Resin has been found to be on average 2% richer in monoterpenes than non-live resin counterparts and for many concentrates that mean double the amount of flavor. Thus, Live Resin caters to cannabis concentrate connoisseurs explaining its rapid rise in popularity

Live Resin’s popularity didn’t take off til about November of last year. In fact, it took a dive from .31% of transactions to .15% in July of 2015. However, Live Resin went from about .3% in November 2015 to .82% of transactions by the end of May 2016 and peaking at .9% in February. Carbonated beverages, on the other hand, have more than doubled from September of last year to May 2016. Carbonated beverage sales went from accounting for .79% of transactions last year to 1.68% this May.
