Support for Cannabis Legalization Grows, New All-Time High

Cannabis Legalization Grows

American voters continue to support cannabis legalization. In fact, the number of people who say they’re in favor of legalizing the drug continues to grow to historic new highs.

Researchers from Quinnipiac University just published the results of a brand new survey.

The numbers from this study show just how many Americans think it’s time to legalize cannabis.

The survey took place from May 24 to May 30. There were 1,561 people who responded to the survey. They were all registered U.S. voters.

Probably the most important number to come out of this survey is the percentage of people who say they’re OK with legalizing cannabis for medical uses.

Eighty nine percent of everyone who responded to the survey said they support the legal use of medical cannabis. Only 9% said they did not support legalizing medical cannabis.

And when it comes to recreational use, 54% said they support the full on legalization of cannabis. Forty one percent said they were against legalizing recreational marijuana.

People between the ages of 18 and 34 voiced the most support for cannabis.

Sixty nine percent of people in this group support fully legalizing cannabis. And 91% said they support medical cannabis.

The survey also looked at people’s political affiliations.

Among Democrats, 65% support full legalization while 30% don’t. For Republicans only 36% said they support full legalization. Sixty two percent of Republicans said they’re against it.

But when it comes to medical cannabis, Republicans voiced much more support. Eighty one percent of them said they support legalizing the drug for medical uses. Only 17% said they were against it.

Democrats were also in favor of legalizing medical cannabis. Ninety four percent of this group said they support it while only 5% said they were against it.

Despite the popular support for cannabis legalization, the plant is still illegal at the federal level.

The DEA still classifies cannabis as a Schedule I drug.

Drugs in this category are viewed as the most dangerous of all drugs. They’re also usually the most heavily criminalized.

At the beginning of the year President Obama said he wouldn’t focus on changing cannabis laws during his last year in office.

But in April the DEA issued a memo saying it might consider changing the status of cannabis.

So far, no changes have been made.

Medical cannabis is now legal in 24 states and Washington D.C. Recreational cannabis is legal in Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and Colorado.
