These Weight Loss Weed Strains Won’t Give You The Munchies

These new weight loss strains are actually designed to curb your appetite. Some are calling it “diet pot” and it is already available at some dispensaries.

Weight Loss Weed Strains

Growers are competing to develop new strains of weed that are perfect for those on a diet. Many growers are focusing their efforts on growing marijuana that won’t give you the munchies. In fact, these new weight loss strains are actually designed to curb your appetite.

Some are calling it “diet pot” and it is already available at some dispensaries. A few puffs of this diet dank and you might find yourself walking out of your local convenience store empty handed. Well, you’ll still need water as these strains won’t do much to stop the cottonmouth that comes with smoking weed.

How Do Strains Suppress Appetite?

The “diet pot” strains are all high in Tetrahydrocannabivarin or THCV. THCV produces very different effects from THC. So while THC increases appetite, THCV actually works to suppress it. A budtender in Washington, claims that growers are now genetically modifying strains to be high in THCV.

Does it Work?

Jesse Henderson, a modern stoner from WA, is looking to cutback on his munchies which lead him to devour all the food in his home. To keep himself in shape, he’s begun smoking strains that are high in THCV. He now swears that he is no longer tempted to pig out while baked.

The crew at KING 5 news from Western Washington decided to put XJ-13, a strain high in THCV, to the test. KING 5’s Eric Wilkinson waves a glazed donut hanging from a string hypnotically in front of Jesse Henderson’s face after a few rips of some XJ-13. He appears amused, but he doesn’t bite.

Next, Wilkinson tears open a bag of Chili Cheese Fritos, which Henderson says is one of his favorites. Still, he doesn’t bite. Cookie dough, a hot pocket, fresh baked cinnamon rolls, not even Ben & Jerry’s ice cream tempts Henderson despite him knowing his old stoner self would have left nothing behind.

Which Strains are High in THCV?

If you want to put this weight loss weed to the test for yourself, here are a few strains known to be relatively high in THCV:

  • Durban Poison: This strain is from South Africa and boasts one of the highest known THCV levels. DP was the highest-testing flower for THCV at the 2014 High Times Seattle U.S. Cannabis Cup. Any strain with Durban Poison in it’s family tree will likely have high levels of THCV.
  • Jack The Ripper: Another common strain with high levels of THCV. Strains that have Jack the Ripper in their lineage usually have higher levels of THCV.
  • Dutch Treat: Having this in your lineage will also result in higher THCV levels.
  • Skunk #1: Strains that are crossed with Skunk #1 usually have higher levels of THCV.
  • Tangie: A cross of Cali Orange and a hybrid of Skunk #1 with about 0.3% THCV.
  • Pie Face OG: A cross between Cherry Pie and “Face Off” OG has about .5% THCV. Cherry Pie is a cross between Grand Daddy Purple and Durban Poison.
  • Girl Scout Cookies: One of the most popular strains to boast higher levels of THCV. This is likely due to GSC’s Durban Poison lineage.
  • Doug’s Varin: This strain has been specifically bred for it’s high THCV content.
  • Willie Nelson: Another strain specifically bred for it’s high THCV content.
  • Ace of Spades: A cross between Jack the Ripper and Black Cherry Soda which reached 2.4% THCV when bred by Category 5 Research.

The Final Hit

If you have access to a medical dispensary or even a recreational pot shop, ask your budtender for strains that are high in THCV. They don’t have to be rare strains like Willie Nelson or Doug’s Varin to contain enough THCV to curb your appetite.
