Walgreens Medical Marijuana Website Sparks Speculation

Walgreens just published a website with information about medical marijuana. The move has led many to wonder if the drugstore chain has plans to go into the medical cannabis space.

Walgreens Medical Marijuana website launched earlier this week, titled “What is Medical Marijuana?“.

The page provides a broad overview of medical cannabis. And many readers have said that the article seems surprisingly open to the idea that cannabis could be an effective form of medicine.

The article talks a lot about current research:

“Current studies have proven that cannabinoid receptors play an important role in many body processes,” the piece says.

“Including metabolic regulation, cravings, pain, anxiety, bone growth and immune function.”

For many in the medical marijuana community, one section stands out as especially promising.

In this section, Walgreens says that “research has also shown marijuana provides pain relief in ways traditional pain medicines don’t.”

It goes on to say that medical cannabis has been used to help treat everything from cancer to Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, heart disorders, muscle stiffness, and multiple sclerosis.

The fact that the article seems open to the idea of medical cannabis has led many to wonder if Walgreens has plans to make a move into the medical marijuana industry.

Walgreens Medical Marijuana Website Sparks Speculation

Walgreens wouldn’t be the first big drugstore chain to think about doing something like this.

In February, Canada’s largest drugstore chain revealed that it had talked with government-licensed marijuana growers. Reports said that Shoppers Drug Mart may be exploring the idea of carrying its line of medical cannabis products.

“Pharmacists are medication experts,” a Shoppers Drug Mart spokesperson said. “We believe that dispensing medical marijuana through pharmacy, like other medications, is the safest option.”

Shoppers Drug hasn’t said whether or not it will go through with the idea. Similarly, Walgreens hasn’t said if it’s thinking about something similar.

But the company’s new website has sparked interest and curiosity within the medical cannabis industry.

Medical cannabis is currently legal in 24 states and Washington D.C.

Pennsylvania legalized it just a couple weeks ago.

The cannabis industry has seen massive growth in recent years as legalization continues.

In 2015, the marijuana industry made $5.4 billion. And experts predict that legal marijuana sales are on pace to hit $22 billion by 2020.

It remains unclear how the legal marijuana landscape will change in the future. But many have speculated that the involvement of corporations like Walgreens could be one of those changes.
