Don’t be so hasty to book that trip to Amsterdam; weed clubs could be coming to a city near you. In Denver, where recreational cannabis is the law of the land, efforts are being made to establish places where people can socially smoke weed. Will these efforts come to fruition? Or will they die in the planning stage?
The state of Colorado legalized recreational weed back in 2012, and since then, adults have been able to purchase cannabis from licensed dispensaries, even without a medical card. There is a catch though. You can’t consume weed, either through smoking or vaping, in any public area, including dispensaries. So, if you’re a responsible adult who has purchased some weed, your only choice is to smoke it at home. Not such a great option if you want to be social and meet new people.
But that might be about to change. Last year, residents of Denver voted to implement measures that would permit bring-your-own weed clubs for legal smokers. The city is set to start accepting applications for weed clubs by the end of this month.
But, of course, there are a dozen hurdles that the cannabis industry in Denver must clear. For one, the state’s liquor board won’t allow the use of weed in any establishment with a liquor license. So bars and most restaurants are automatically out as potential public places where one could smoke weed. Places like art galleries and coffee shops are still in the running to allow pot use on the premises, though.
But there’s an additional issue. Potential pot clubs must maintain a substantial distance away from schools, playgrounds, and any other place children may gather. Twice as far as liquor establishments, to be exact. Which is, frankly, hypocritical since alcohol is known to be much more destructive and unhealthy than cannabis is.
Final Hit: Weed Clubs Could Be Coming To A City Near You
Despite the strict rules and regulations regarding cannabis use, the players of Denver’s cannabis scene remain hopeful. The possibility of weed clubs in the city is too good to ignore. If cannabis users could have a designated legal area to smoke that isn’t limited to their home, it could revolutionize the way people view the herb. By implementing weed clubs, cannabis smoking will become viewed as a social activity, akin to drinking alcohol, and thus will become more accepted. Progress is progress, especially when it comes to cannabis. Despite the plethora of research supporting legalization, it remains a controversial subject for lawmakers and state officials. Legal public consumption would be a huge step in the right direction for the country. And if Denver leads the way, then weed clubs could be coming to a city near you.
