Cannabis Company Holds Job Fair To Fill Roles

Canopy Growth's Tweed brand is looking to staff over 100 positions at all levels of its retail operations this summer.

Even though legal cannabis could come to Canada after the target deadline of July 1, one of the country’s largest cannabis producers will be ready for whenever legalization finally hits. To make sure their facilities are fully staffed when adult use sales take effect this summer, Canopy Growth is holding a weekend-long job fair to staff retail positions at four of the company’s storefronts.

Canopy Growth Is Conducting Interviews To Fill Over 200 Cannabis Jobs

Canopy Growth’s job fair is currently underway. The first round of interviews is going on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Rocket in downtown St. John’s.

Canopy says that so far they’re very impressed with the turnout. Officials from Canopy Growth sat down with dozens of applicants eager to take advantage of the opportunity.

“We love it. I think that’s what we do as a company,’ Canopy regional general manager Mario Castillo told CBC News. “We really focus on working in communities that want us there, and then we focus on creating jobs and opportunities for everybody who works for us.”

Canopy’s First Round of Hiring Will Staff The Company’s Tweed Brand

The Tweed website echoes Castillo’s sentiments. It describes how the brand aims to become “a part of the fabric of every neighborhood that welcomes us.”

The brand started off four years ago, taking over an old Hershey’s chocolate factory in Ontario. Before long, Tweed grew into an industrial-scale operation.

With more than 2.4 million square feet of indoor and greenhouse cultivation space and partnerships across the industry, Tweed is ready for the surge in demand for high-quality cannabis when retail sales come online this summer.

Canopy Growth will use that production space to supply Newfoundland and Labrador with the bulk of their cannabis products. Tweed has four retail storefronts in the province at St. Johns, Conception Bay, Mount Pearl, and Corner Brook.

The company’s first round of hirings will staff those four retail locations. Canopy is looking to hire 75-100 people for positions at all levels.

Tweed’s retail stores need managers, cashiers, budtenders, product information consultants and security guards to check ID.

Having cast such a wide net, applicants arrived at the job fair with a diverse range of qualifications. Everyone who arrived sat down for an on-the-spot interview with Tweed staff.

Some had been eyeing Canopy Growth’s operations in the area for a while. Others were just excited about the opportunity to get in on the ground floor with one of Canada’s largest cannabis companies.

The economic benefits of cannabis legalization aren’t limited to a company’s profits. Often, they also redound to communities, attracting investment and employment opportunities.

And that sense of community responsibility will be important for Canada’s cannabis companies. The law allows individual provinces to set their own rules and restrictions for the legal cannabis industry. Being a good citizen, then, will be essential for a company that wants to thrive.
