Did Kurt Cobain Smoke Weed?

So did Kurt Cobain smoke weed? We decided to investigate whether or not the lead singer of Nirvana was a stoner or not.

You’re probably wondering, did Kurt Cobain smoke weed? The former Nirvana frontman’s struggles with heroin were well-documented, and they led to his untimely death in 1994. But did the musician also smoke cannabis as well? Cannabis is known to help with withdrawals, as well as alleviating some of the pain associated with it. It’s fair to wonder whether or not Cobain used weed during his struggles with addiction. Let’s take a look.

Who is Kurt Cobain?

For some of you, Kurt Cobain might have been before your time. For others, he’s a legend of a generation. Cobain was born on February 20th, 1967 in Aberdeen, Washington. It was evident from early on that Cobain was a musical talent. He began singing at age two. By age four he was playing the piano, and writing his own little songs. He also was a talented artist, who would frequently draw his favorite cartoon characters in his bedroom.

Cobain received his first guitar at the age of 14 and instantly taught himself rock classics such as Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven and Queen’s Another One Bites the Dust. Cobain eventually started making original songs and reached out to Krist Novoselic, a fellow punk rock enthusiast, about starting a band. Apprehensive at first, Novoselic eventually agreed and Nirvana was formed. The band went through a rotation of drummers throughout their time, with Dave Grohl (1990-94) being their most tenured.

Nirvana released their first album Bleach in 1989, and it was a smash hit. They garnered astronomical acclaim with their second album, Nevermind. Their first single off the album Smells Like Teen Spirit was a huge success, and solidified Nirvana as alternative rock pioneers. Cobain was considered by the media a “spokesman for a generation“.

Nirvana remained immensely popular until major tragedy hit the band in 1994. Cobain, who struggled with physical health issues, depression and drug problems for years, had developed a full-fledged addiction to heroin. He checked himself into rehab in 1992, and again in 1994. Less than a week into his second stint in rehab, Cobain escaped the facility. A week later, he was found with a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head. He was 27.

Puff or Pass?

So the question remains, did Kurt Cobain smoke weed? There’s an overwhelming amount of evidence to suggest Cobain did in fact smoke. It was rumored that Cobain smoked weed as early as age 14. Apparently, it helped him overcome some of his anxiety and depression.  “I could escape all day long and not have routine nervous breakdowns,” Cobain said in the documentary Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck.

It’s also evident that Cobain smoked weed into his adulthood. In the booklet for Nirvana’s album Utero, you can see Cobain and Novoselic sharing a joint.

Final Hit: Did Kurt Cobain Smoke Weed?

It’s pretty obvious Kurt Cobain smoked weed in his day. However, what is unclear is how much he used it in his adult life. Unfortunately, the demon drug of heroin caught a stranglehold on Cobain, and cannabis was considered an afterthought. Perhaps if Cobain coped with his existential pain with the harmless drug of cannabis instead of heroin, we’d still have the legend here today. Unfortunately, there are still people out there that think weed is as bad for you as opioids, and they’re part of the problem. Either way, rest in peace, Kurt. Hopefully, you’re smoking wherever you are.
