This entry level position isn’t the highest paying, but that’s because trimming the flowers off of a marijuana plant isn’t exactly rocket science.

In California trimmers usually make over $12 an hour and depending on the state or dispensary trimmers can make much more.

Some medical dispensaries even pay trimmers by the pound that they trim so you can earn more per hour depending on how quickly and efficiently you do the job.

It beats working at a fast food joint, and it’s a way into the growing cannabis industry.

The primary responsibilities of a budtender include the handling and knowledge of the product as well as interacting with and educating clients.

Budtender is also an entry-level position that may just require some people skills and marijuana knowledge, so it pays similarly to a Bud Trimmer.

Budtending perks:  Some Cali dispensaries allow their employees to medicate with edibles or smokeless concentrates and some other dispensary owners in California can and will allow their budtenders to smoke while at work.

However, in Colorado, it is illegal to smoke on the premises of a dispensary but according to one 23-year-old college student in the state claims  bud tending is “one of the best jobs out there.”

In her interview with micheck daily, Sloane Poorman a Budtender in Boulder, Colorado claims her employer “recommends that I smoke them all,” she said“They don’t make you, but it’s recommended.”

The first part of Sloane’s shift consists of taking “pounds and pounds of pot” out of the huge safe in the back of the store and weighing it all. She says, “there’s enough samples” before “putting everything else back in the bags.”

3. Cannabis Chef (Average Salary: $50,000-90,000)

Washington Post

Cannabis Chefs are usually people with culinary skills and some kitchen background.

Due to states forbidding the smoking of the plant or patients who just prefer to remain smoke-free, cannabis must be infused into foods and snacks for eating with the help of a chef.

After the first year of edible sales in Colorado “Potent cookies, candies and drinks — once considered a niche market — now account for roughly 45 percent of the legal marijuana marketplace and led to the most high-profile marijuana controversies in 2014.”

This has caused a significant rise in demand for cannabis chefs and if you have experience in the kitchen and interest in the cannabis industry this may be your way in.

2. Extraction Tech (Average Salary: $80,000-$105,000)

When many people think of pot, they picture it in its raw flower form.

However, in recent years concentrated marijuana has had a surge in popularity likely due to its strong levels of THC and minimal smell.

The only problem is it takes skill a fair amount of experience and expertise to extract the THC from a cannabis plant, and this is a new profession.

That’s why right now Extraction Technician is one of the most in-demand jobs within the cannabis industry.

One cannabis company claims that most people they hire for the job have Ph.D.’s, illustrating this is not as much of an entry-level job as being a trimmer or budtender.

As a result, the salary of an extract technician averages around 100,000 a year.

1. Grow Master (Average Salary: $120,000+)

Without the cannabis plant none of these other jobs would even exist so one of the most in-demand cannabis industry jobs is a grower.

According to one employer, they are looking for an “experienced Master Grower, who is eager to be a part of a thriving Dispensary and Cultivation business.

The ideal candidate will hold a Bachelor’s Degree, with at least 5 years’ experience in horticulture, botany or agriculture.”

If you’ve got the skills a grower is a great career and Peterson believes that over time recreational marijuana will create celebrity cultivators much like celebrity chefs.

These cannabis industry jobs are all unique to the industry. However, there are plenty of other jobs within the industry that can be found such as driver, security, accountant, writer, lawyer and many more but since none of these are new professions there’s more competition and less demand for them.
