Ever wonder what it would be like if you could have majored in weed instead of having it as, erm, an “extracurricular”? Thanks to a video posted on and produced by VICE’s online channel Daily VICE, now you can experience what attending a weed university is actually like. Talk about putting the “high” in “higher education.”
A Look Inside Oaksterdam University
Based in Oakland, California, and founded in 2007, Oaksterdam University touts itself as the first “cannabis college.” According to their site, students accepted into their prestigious program receive “highest quality and most comprehensive training available for the cannabis community and industry.” Their campus includes an on-site cultivation facility and a comprehensive course list in classes topically ranging from law to business to horticulture. With a count of 30,000 alumni worldwide, tuition fees generally run up to $1595 per semester—a bang for your buck, indeed. (Just keep in mind that OU does not have accreditation, but hopefully, that will change in the future.)
With a count of 30,000 alumni worldwide, tuition fees generally run up to $1595 per semester—a bang for your buck, indeed. (Just keep in mind that OU isn’t an accredited university, but hopefully, that will change in the future.) Professors are quick to point out the diversity of the student body.
“I have high school graduates sitting next to neuro surgeons sitting next to grandmothers sitting next to politicians and policy-makers,” one instructor explained enthusiastically.
And let’s face it: this might be the only place you can show up high to class and get extra credit for it. (Just kidding, of course.) (Maybe.)
But don’t be fooled, these kids are getting schooled. An average day includes at least one lecture, followed by hands-on demos, labs, and tons of homework. Yep, that’s right: weed homework.
“Before I came out here, I thought I knew everything about marijuana,” one student said in an OU recruitment video. “It turns out I didn’t.”
Final Hit: Weed University or Bust
But is there a good investment in attending a weed university like Oaksterdam? Considering the burgeoning cannabis industry thanks to weed legalization in states like Nevada and the advent of the green rush, we’re going to go ahead and place the smart money on the hallowed futures of OU’s student population. If we don’t decide to enroll at Oaksterdam ourselves, that is.
