Snorting Chocolate To Get High Is A New Fad In Europe

Snorting Chocolate

Snorting chocolate is apparently the latest fad when it comes to crazy ways to get high.

According to a report from IFL Science the whole thing started in Berlin. As people looked for new—and legal—ways to get high they started experimenting with chocolate.

Well, not really chocolate as we know it.

What we’re talking about here is raw cacao. The kind of chocolate we eat is cacao that’s been processed, sweetened with sugar, and then mixed with milk or cream.

But raw cacao is a very different thing than the finished chocolate product. It’s extremely bitter and can be kind of unpleasant to eat. And if the claims of cacao snorters are true, it may also give you a bit of a high.

Chocolate Snorting History

This isn’t the first time humans have turned to snorting chocolate (cacao) to get some sort of psychoactive effect.

According to the Smithsonian, ancient “Mayans and Aztecs believed the cacao bean had magical, or even divine, properties, suitable for use in the most sacred rituals of birth, marriage and death.”

Cacao users of the 21st century may have taken cacao out of the realm of mystical ritual and into the realm of nightclub partying. But they’re still looking for the same pleasurable psychoactive effects.

Snorting chocolate (cacao) has so far picked up the most popularity on the European nightclub scene. But it’s quickly spreading throughout the world.

Just as the Mayans and Aztecs before them, partiers who snort cacao claim it can give them a pleasurable high.

But the science is still very unclear.

Why Snort Chocolate?

What we do know is that cacao contains endorphins, which make humans feel good. It also has a chemical called tyrosine, which is a precursor to dopamine. All of these things act on the brain to produce happy, positive, euphoric sensations.

But nobody’s ever studied if snorting cacao will actually produce any of those effects. And nobody’s researched if there are any dangerous side effects that come from snorting cacao.

Basically, nobody really knows for sure what snorting cacao does to a person. But many are concerned that it might not be the best idea.

IFL Science summarized it best.

“As a general rule, it’s a good idea to think of the nose as a one-way system,” their article said. “And . . . while things may regularly come out of it, sending material the other way and up towards the brain is probably not a wise move.”

The way we see it, snorting chocolate (cacao) is another example of just how far people will go to get high, have a good time, and party.

Chocolate Cannabis

When we outlaw something like cannabis, which is an all natural and incredibly safe way to get high, it forces people to get “creative” and to experiment with all sorts of crazy stuff.

Wouldn’t it be a whole lot easier and safer to just allow people to use cannabis than to have them running around and snorting raw cacao up their noses?

Scientists really have no idea what snorting chocolate (cacao) will do to a person’s body. But they do know that consuming cannabis is actually pretty safe.

Way back in the 1980s researchers concluded that a person would have to smoke 1,500 pounds of marijuana in 15 minutes to run even the slightest risk of overdosing.

And a brand new study found that alcohol is 114 times more dangerous than cannabis.

We’re not saying that cannabis is some sort of magical solution to the world’s problems. But we are saying that cannabis is one of the safest, most natural ways to get the pleasurable experiences associated with being high.

But when laws make it hard for people to access safe forms of recreational drugs it kind of forces them to search out untested, experimental, and possibly dangerous ways to get the high they’re looking for.

Making recreational cannabis more accessible gives people one less reason to experiment with sketchy drugs and weird, untested, potentially dangerous fads like snorting chocolate (cacao).
