Of the 473 adult marijuana users surveyed, over 80 percent reported replacing their prescription drugs with cannabis to treat their ailments. Considering how safe marijuana is compared to many widely available pharmaceuticals, it’s no surprise that people are turning to the plant for relief.
In fact, marijuana is so effective that it could completely replace some common prescription drugs currently on the market. And it could do so without the danger of overdose or addiction lurking in the background.
Painkillers like Vicodin, Oxycontin, and Percocet are used for exactly the purpose their name implies: to alleviate pain. While they’re effective in doing so, they’re also highly addictive. Further, their potential for abuse leads to overdoses being all too common. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 44 Americans die every single day from opioid overdose.
Given that it’s virtually impossible to overdose on marijuana, its status as a safer alternative is an understatement. In fact, no one has ever died from cannabis consumption in recorded history.
Numerous studies have shown that marijuana is a highly effective medication for pain management. Considering the herb does the same job as painkillers with none of the risks, cannabis can be seen not only as a replacement for opioids but as a superior alternative.
