5. Antidepressants

Antidepressants are used to treat major depressive disorder, characterized by chronic low mood and general unhappiness in adults. The most common of these is Zoloft, but many others are used in treating depression.

Like with sleep aids, the potential for abuse with antidepressants is virtually non-existent. Still, the adverse side effects can be severe even when used as directed. Some people develop sexual arousal disorder, where the patient loses their sexual desire and has difficulty achieving orgasm. Others experience an increase in suicidal thoughts, and the medication has been linked to an increase in actual suicides too.

Not so with cannabis. And like Zoloft, marijuana has been shown to be effective in treating depression. By stimulating the brain’s production of chemicals responsible for a positive mood, cannabis fights depression at the source. And best of all, it does so without the risk of suicide or other serious side effects.

The Final Hit

Marijuana’s versatility as a medication for a variety of ailments is incredible. Not only is it just as effective as traditional pharmaceuticals (or sometimes even more so), but it is also the safer alternative in every instance. It’s no wonder that as people become more educated, they’re turning away from pills and toward cannabis to treat their ailments.
