We’ve heard a lot of crazy things come out of the mouths of conservative politicians. When it comes to weed, they’re generally not huge fans. And they aren’t afraid to let everyone know it. But one of the weirder statements came out of Canada recently. It all went down as federal members of parliament debated the Cannabis Act. Conservative MP, Marilyn Gladu, claimed that kids will be smoking weed with toaster ovens. Huh?
Toaster Ovens…Say What?
First, a little context. Bill C-45, or the Cannabis Act, is currently getting a second reading in the Canadian House of Commons. If passed, the bill would make it legal for Canadians to grow up to four cannabis plants in their home. Sounds dope, right?
Sadly, Canadian conservative politicians have been making all kinds of wild and crazy doomsday predictions around this bill. It’s been discussed multiple times since May 30, but they can’t seem to come to an agreement. Some conservatives even suggested that if it became legal, kids would eat the plants, become poisoned, or end up being drug mules for their parents! Talk about a slippery slope of absurdity.
During an evening session, Liberal MP Bardish Chagger, Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, moved to limit the amount of time Parliament would spend discussing the bill. She gave a suggested cap of five hours of talk time.
Some MPs didn’t like that and suggested that Chagger was “shutting down debate” on the topic, or trying to “force the bill” through. Then came the weirdest comment of the night, creating a brand new Twitter hashtag ripe for mockery.
#ToasterBud and Cannabis Toaster Ovens?
Conservative MP Marilyn Gladu spoke up against the suggested five-hour discussion cap.
“We have already established that this legislation would put marijuana in the hands of children,” she said. “Not just with the 15 joints that 12-year-olds can have but with the four plants per household, so little Johnny can put some in the toaster oven and smoke it up.”
Say what, now? Gladu’s point about 12-year-olds possessing “15 joints” is in reference to the act’s call for making it illegal for youngsters to have more than five grams on hand. This way, little Johnny wouldn’t go to jail for 30 years just for having a joint in his pocket.
But the cannabis toaster comment surely didn’t help her case, as no one in their right mind would smoke out of a toaster oven. (Much too messy and hazardous. We prefer soda cans or your average bong or pipe).
Naturally, Twitter went wild and created an honorary hashtag, #ToasterBud, mocking Gladu’s bizarre anti-cannabis rant.
What do I set my toaster to for the highest quality smoke? I do toast at 3, does pot need much longer? #toasterbud
