Peter Lewis

He was the CEO of Progressive Insurance and a progressive in his own right. Peter Lewis, who amassed a fortune worth over a billion dollars, spent much of his money on lobbying for legalization. According to the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, he spent between $40 and $60 million on legalization.
Lewis was a major contributor to legalization efforts in Colorado, California, Massachusetts, Washington State and Ohio.
Personal experience lead Lewis to spent his time and fortune supporting legalization. In 1998, Lewis lost part of his left leg. For pain relief, Lewis turned to medical marijuana, which wasn’t as widely accepted then as it is today. This lead to his arrest in New Zealand in 2000.
Afterward, Lewis’ campaign to legalize weed became even more public. Lewis passed away in 2013 but he will be remembered as a business mogul who used, and advocated for, marijuana.
