The 15 Most Shocking Marijuana Consumers Of All Time
This list of shocking marijuana consumers is only shocking because we’ve been so conditioned by stereotypes to assume that cannabis users are all more or less the same. But as you’ll see in this list, the stoner stereotype just doesn’t hold up.
The cannabis community includes personalities ranging from Wiz Khalifa to Martha Stewart and everyone in between. You may be surprised by some of the names on this list, since none of them really fit the classic stereotypes of the lazy stoner who smokes pot all day.
The Most Shocking Marijuana Consumers of All Time:
1. Rush Limbaugh
Although Rush Limbaugh’s hyper-conservative talk show has made him the voice of U.S. conservatism, he’s probably not the first person that comes to mind you think about someone using marijuana.
But apparently back in 1993, he told Playboy that he’d smoked marijuana twice. He confirmed that he did indeed inhale, but ultimately said he wasn’t a fan.
1. George Washington
Yes, the George Washington. The father of all founding fathers wrote in his journal about using cannabis to alleviate pain, especially from what sounds like a pretty nasty toothache.
He, along with many other early American politicians, was also a big proponent of growing hemp.
3. Jeb Bush
Jeb Bush had a disappointing run when it came to trying to become the Republican party’s presidential candidate earlier this year. But his efforts at getting high were apparently much more successful.
He once told reporters: “I drank alcohol and I smoked marijuana when I was at Andover. It was pretty common.”
4. Glenn Beck
There are three things Glenn Beck is known for: conservative politics, conspiracy theories, and crying. His use of cannabis is much less known.
But he’s actually been fairly open about his marijuana use. While it sounds like he doesn’t really partake anymore, it was apparently once a fairly regular part of his life.
5. Queen Victoria
We’ve been hearing a lot lately about medical marijuana products designed specifically to ease menstrual pains. But the idea is definitely not a new one. It’s a relatively well-known fact that during the late 1800s, Queen Victoria regularly used cannabis to help get her through menstrual cramps and pains.
6. Bill Gates
One of the wealthiest people in the entire world, Bill Gates is apparently no stranger to the joys of cannabis. Who knows, maybe marijuana gave him a little creative boost back in the early days of Microsoft.
7. Martha Stewart
Martha Stewart is the queen of perfection, and that apparently includes smoking weed.
Here’s what she told talk show host Andy Cohen: “A girl and a guy were smoking joints and they had them in their hands like this, and I said, boy, those are sloppy joints.”
“Of course I know how to roll a joint.”
While this isn’t necessarily a flat-out confession, her message seems pretty clear.
8. George W. Bush
George W. Bush gave the world—especially the comedy world—tons of quotable lines.
Here’s what he had to say about smoking herb: “I wouldn’t answer the marijuana questions. You know why? Because I don’t want some little kid doing what I tried.”
A very sly way of backhandedly admitting to smoking pot.
9. William Shakespeare
According to some historians, Shakespeare may have received a creative spark from cannabis. Researchers have discovered clay pipes in the poet’s garden with traces of marijuana still in them.
10. John F. Kennedy
There are multiple reports of President John F. Kennedy lighting up a little green in the White House. Some reports say he smoked to help his back pain. And one especially great story describes the president smoking up in the middle of national security crises involving Cuba and the Soviet Union.
11. Clarence Thomas
Long-time Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is personally familiar with marijuana. Given his personal experience using a Schedule I drug, we wonder if he ever feels bad about enforcing the U.S.’s strict pot laws.
Apparently not that bad. He was one of only two justices who didn’t agree with the Supreme Court’s recent decision to throw out a lawsuit that could have threatened legal marijuana in Colorado.
12. Rick Santorum
Most people probably wouldn’t expect to see well-known Republican leader Rick Santorum smoking a bowl or puffing on a joint. But he told reporters that he smoked his fair share of sticky icky back when he was a college student.
13. George Soros
George Soros is widely viewed as one of the smartest, most savvy financial minds of our time. He was even given the nickname “the man who broke the Bank of England” after making $1 billion in a single deal.
He told reporters that he had definitely tried marijuana, although he said, “it did not become a habit and I have not tasted it in many years.”
14. Ted Turner
World famous media mogul Ted Turner sounds like he might be a fairly devoted marijuana enthusiast. One source reported that “it is common knowledge that Turner sits in his office and smokes marijuana.”
15. Michael Bloomberg
When asked if he’d ever tried marijuana, this super-wealthy former mayor of NYC sad: “You bet I did. And I enjoyed it.” Enough said.
