Weed-Infused Twinkies: Quick Introduction
It seems like virtually everybody knows about these cream-filled cakes, and references to them have embedded themselves in pop culture. Even in places where Twinkies have never been on store shelves, people know about them, thanks to a reference in the original “Ghostbusters” (1984).
And of course, there’s the urban legend about the Twinkie’s infinite shelf life. But in fact, Twinkies almost disappeared for good when the company that made them went bankrupt. Luckily for us, Twinkies are back and seem here to stay. Even luckier, it’s not that hard to learn how to make weed-infused Twinkies.
- 16 ounces yellow cake mix
- 4 eggs
- 2/3 cup water
- 8 oz marshmallow cream
- 1/2 cup vegetable shortening
- 1/3 cup powdered sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 to 2 grams finely ground fresh cannabis flowers
1. Find The Right Amount of THC
Before deciding how much ground cannabis to use in your weed-infused Twinkie recipe, you should do a quick measurement to find out the THC potency of your cannabis.
Using that calculation, you can make sure that your edibles aren’t too strong. Here’s our handy guide for doing just that.
2. Decarboxylate Your Herb
The process of activating THC is called decarboxylation, or “decarbing.” Applying low heat over a long period of time slowly decarbs your weed without damaging it. So you’ll have to do that for your weed-infused Twinkies.
Patience is key. Gently spread your broken up cannabis buds on a baking sheet, and place in an oven preheated to 225 degrees F. Decarb for 90 to 120 minutes.
There are differences of opinion on the best temperature. But either way, 240 degrees is the absolute limit. Never go over it. Lower temps by 10 degrees just require more time, but can be gentler on the weed’s delicate compounds.
3. Grind Your Flower Into Fine Powder
This one’s pretty self-explanatory. The more powdery you can grind up your decarbed weed, the better. A good weed grinder will do the trick.
4. Make the Cake Batter
Hopefully you’ve had a toke or two before embarking on your how to make weed-infused Twinkies adventure. So now that you’re baked, it’s time to get baking.
Next, whisk those eggs and set aside. Now mix the cake mix with the water. Add eggs and stir it all together until well-blended.
5. Fill Twinkies Mold
Now that you’ve got your batter, it’s time to make a Twinkies-shaped mold. Use a spice bottle or similarly sized object to create tin-foil molds for your weed-infused Twinkies.
Just wrap the foil around the bottle then carefully open one end and pull the bottle back out. Once you’ve shaped the foil molds, grease ’em up with some non-stick spray.
Now fill your molds 3/4 of the way with the batter. Bake at 325 degrees F for 30 minutes or until just golden brown. After they’ve cooled, carefully remove the cakes from the molds.
5. Make Your Weed-Infused Cream Filling
In a mixing bowl, combine the powdered sugar, shortening, marshmallow cream, vanilla extract, and powdered, decarbed cannabis.
You can play with the consistency by adding water one tablespoon at a time. Water will make the cream more fluid.
You have two choices here. If you don’t mind eating the decarbed flower and having a heavy weed taste in your Twinkies, great. You can leave the weed in there.
But if you’d rather not, you can let the cream filling mixture sit overnight. The fat molecules in the cream will actually bond to the THC, pulling it out of the plant material. Then, you can strain the plant matter out. Of course, this way is a bit more refined, but takes more effort.
6. Fill Up Your Weed-Infused Twinkies
Use a toothpick to bore three holes into the bottom of your baked and cooled cakes. Use a piping bag, like you would for frosting a cake, to fill those holes with weed-infused creamy awesomeness. Be careful not to split your cakes. And that’s how to make weed-infused Twinkies!
7. Twinkie Time!
The moment you’ve been waiting for has arrived. Chow down on those delicious cream-filled cakes! Homemade weed-infused Twinkies? What’s better than that?
Be sure to keep in mind that edibles take up to 90 minutes to hit and can start having an effect as early as 45 minutes. Edible highs can be stronger and last longer than a typical smoking high. So take care of yourself, and don’t try to reach for the pipe right away.
