Nate Diaz Could Be Suspended 1 Year

Long Story Short

UFC fighter Nate Diaz has been blowing up headlines lately after he openly puffed a CBD vape pen during a post-fight press conference. The controversy could get even hotter as the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) launches its investigation of the athlete. If the agency decides Diaz broke rules about marijuana use, it could suspend the fighter for up to a full year.

The Details

The whole drama started last Saturday when Nate Diaz fought Conor McGregor in UFC 202. Immediately after the fight, Diaz made the usual rounds at press conferences and talking to media. But his interviews were a bit different than most athletes’.

That’s because the whole time he talked to reporters, he puffed away on a vape pen that was filled with CBD oil. And he was as open as possible about what he was doing.

He even explained the benefits of using CBD. He told reporters,

“It’s CBD. It helps with the healing process and inflammation and stuff like that. So you wanna get these for before, after the fight, training. It’ll make your life a better place.”

And while his bold vaping has made him an overnight hero in the cannabis community, others are less excited about his public CBD use.

Nate Diaz Could Face 1 Year Suspension

Ultimate fighters are governed by rules set up by the USADA. And cannabis is one of the big things the agency outlaws. If a fighter tests positive for cannabis, he or she could be suspended from future fights.

Earlier this year, the USADA suspended Diego Brandao for nine months when he tested positive for cannabis on the night of a fight. As of now, the USADA is investigating Diaz’s post-fight vaping, but it hasn’t reached any final conclusions yet.

Diaz did a drug test earlier that night, but the results haven’t come back yet. If the test comes back with more than 150 ng/ml of cannabis metabolites Diaz could be suspended for as long as one year.

But even if by some weird miracle the test doesn’t come back positive, he might still be suspended. That’s because the USADA considers admitted use of a banned drug as reason enough to suspend an athlete. Diaz’s open admission and explanation of what he was doing could be enough to land him on the sidelines.
