Dr. Dre could be joining a significant number of other artists with a marijuana brands named after them.

There’s nothing unusual about celebrities moving into the cannabis industry. In fact, there are already several well-known musicians, actors, and other high profile celebs who have made some sort of foray into the market. Now, it looks like Dr. Dre might the latest name on that list. In Canada, Canopy Growth Corp. recently filed a trademark application for a brand called “Chronic By Dre.”

Chronic By Dre

The application was filed with the Government of Canada on August 31, 2018. The applicant on the paperwork is listed as Tweed Inc., which is a subsidiary of Canopy Growth Corp.

At this time, there are not many details available. But the application itself lists a number of potential products that could fall beneath the Chronic by Dre brand. These include:

  • Smokable cannabis bud.
  • Plants and seeds.
  • Marijuana oils, capsules, and tablets.
  • Cannabis drinks, including teas, carbonated drinks, and non-carbonated drinks.
  • Topicals like lotions, body cream, body wash, and other similar products.

Canopy Growth Inc.

Canopy Growth is one of Canada’s largest marijuana companies. In fact, it’s becoming one of the largest such companies in the world.

And the company has been making numerous headlines recently. In particular, Canopy has been a pioneer when it comes to public stock exchanges.

It was the first publicly traded, federally regulated cannabis company in North America. Then, in May it became the first weed company to trade on the New York Stock Exchange.

Canopy Growth has been expanding to other parts of the global market as well. For example, in July, the company announced that it was expanding into the South America market. Canopy now owns one a leading medical marijuana firm based in Colombia.

As a result of all this activity, Canopy has been getting a lot of attention and appears to be exploring new partnerships. In August, Constellation Brands poured $4 billion into Canopy. Constellation Brands owns and makes Corona and Modelo beer.

Now, it looks like Canopy could be moving into its latest partnership. This time, the company could be teaming up with Dr. Dre.

Celebs and Cannabis

In his music, Dr. Dre has always been very vocal about his love of weed. Most notably, he named his classic album “The Chronic.” The wildly popular album is apparently the inspiration for what sounds like the rapper’s new marijuana brand.

Dr. Dre is the latest celeb to jump into the legal cannabis market. Notably, fellow rapper Snoop Dogg has been one of the most active. Other rappers with marijuana brands include Wiz Khalifa, Freddie Gibbs, and The Game.

Similarly, Willie Nelson has his own well-known brand of cannabis. And actor Woody Harrelson made an unsuccessful bid to open a dispensary in Hawaii.
