Who is Joseph Gordon-Levitt?

Joseph Gordon-Levitt began his career as a successful child actor. In his youth, he appeared in the films A River Runs Through It, Angels in the Outfield and the romantic comedy 10 Things I Hate About You. He also had television roles in Dark Shadows and 3rd Rock From the Sun.

Gordon-Levitt decided to take a hiatus from acting in 2000 and pursue a college degree. He was a General Studies major in Columbia University. He decided to drop out in 2004 to re-pursue acting, citing he would only be in “good movies” from now on.

In 2004, Gordon-Levitt starred in the movie Mysterious Skin and then got the lead role in the 2005 film Brick. Both performances for Gordon-Levitt were much more serious in tone than his previous roles, and he was lauded by critics for his newfound drama niche. He later starred in Shadowboxer, and the 2007 crime drama The Lookout.

Gordon-Levitt solidified himself as a mainstream actor in 2010, after replacing James Franco in Christopher Nolan’s thriller Inception. He also went on to star in another Nolan film, The Dark Knight Rises, in 2012.

Gordon-Levitt made his directorial debut for the film Don Jon, a movie in which he wrote, directed and starred in. In 2016, Gordon-Levitt played the lead role of Edward Snowden in the biographical film Snowden. The film received mixed reviews.

After a little research, it was pretty obvious that JGL is an avid weed smoker in his spare time. He’s mentioned his hobby in several television interviews to date. In a 2015 interview about his movie Snowden, Gordon-Levitt revealed that he actually smoked weed with the director of that film, Oliver Stone.

Gordon Levitt described his experience with Playboy Magazine:

“With Oliver it was really nice because most of the time we were in this kind of high-stakes situation of working, and when we were smoking, we just smoked and watched a couple of movies a few times,” said Gordon-Levitt, “He’ll say s— people don’t say. If I laughed at something while we were watching a movie, he would be like, ‘Why are you laughing?’ … He’s always kind of nudging you.”

In the same year, JGL described another celebrity he enjoyed smoking with– notorious Hollywood stoner Seth Rogen. He went on Jimmy Kimmel to talk about his experience, and how it helped with the creative process of filmmaking.

“We’re all throwing ideas in at the last minute, and there is definitely a joint being passed around the room early in the day,” Gordon-Levitt said of the collaborative process of making a movie with Rogen. “The first day I said like, ‘Oh, I know how to smoke. I’ve smoked since I was a kid. I can do this, sure. Let’s see! It’ll inspire good comedy.’”

He also gave some advice to the kids out there who like to smoke weed.

“Smoke at the end of the day, kids, wait until the day’s work is done. Then enjoy your weed.”
